A Weekend of Wellness: ARBI’s Inaugural Retreat for Survivors and Families

October 8, 2024 > Events, News

From September 27th to 29th, 2024, ARBI hosted its first-ever retreat for brain injury and stroke survivors, along with their caregivers and families, at the William Watson Lodge in Kananaskis. The lodge itself is a facility within Peter Lougheed Provincial Park and offers accessible accommodations for people with disabilities. Nestled among the majestic mountains, woodlands, and crystal-clear lakes, the event was designed to offer participants a chance to connect with nature, each other, and themselves.

Over three days and two nights, ten families had the opportunity to enjoy the serenity of the great outdoors with accessible accommodations and trails. The event kicked off with a lively BBQ on Friday, where approximately 30 attendees gathered to share a meal, stories, and laughter. The community spirit was palpable as old friendships were strengthened and new connections blossomed.

The weekend’s special guest was a speaker from Rocky Mountain Adaptive, who inspired attendees by showcasing their incredible work in providing outdoor recreational activities for individuals with disabilities. Their mission aligns with ARBI’s own commitment to fostering community and wellness through inclusive opportunities.

Many participants also enjoyed outdoor adventures—cycling accessible bike paths, exploring new trails, and gathering around the campfire. The picturesque setting provided a perfect backdrop for moments of relaxation, reflection, and bonding.

A heartfelt thank you goes to Maurice, caregiver and chef for the day, whose delicious meals brought everyone together and made the BBQ even more memorable.

The success of this retreat has laid the groundwork for future events, where we hope to continue fostering a sense of belonging, community, and wellness for all attendees.

We invite you to join us for a special event on Giving Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at the Bowcliff Seniors Lawn Bowling Club in Calgary. At Caregiver Reflections, caregivers will share their personal experiences from the wellness retreat, offering valuable insights and support to others in similar roles.
