Supporting the Whole Family

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) or stroke has a profound impact not only on the survivor but the entire family. Lives are forever changed, and families often undergo a wide range of emotional responses in the aftermath. Recognizing the ongoing need for support, ARBI provides comprehensive assistance for brain injury survivors and their caregivers as they reintegrate into their lives and communities.

Neuropsychology Support

ARBI’s neuropsychologist collaborates with survivors, caregivers, and staff to address the cognitive, social, emotional, and behavioural consequences of brain injury or stroke. The neuropsychologist assesses the survivor’s cognitive abilities and emotional well-being and offers recommendations to aid successful reintegration into the community.

Social Worker Support

Our dedicated social worker plays a pivotal role in the journey of clients and their caregivers. From intake to discharge, the social worker fosters a safe and collaborative environment, providing:

  • Supportive counselling to clients and caregivers.
  • Connections to valuable community resources.
  • Strengthening of partnerships within the brain injury community support network.
  • Collaboration on client treatment plans, discharge planning, and overall well-being.

We recognize that every client and family carries their own unique sources of strength and healing potential. With our support, we aim to empower them with the knowledge that life can continue after a brain injury or stroke. At ARBI, we believe in the possibility of a hopeful future for every individual and family we serve.

Caregiver Support Group

When a loved one suffers a brain injury, it affects the entire family. Caregivers often experience a range of emotions, including burden, distress, anxiety, anger, and depression. Taking care of yourself is crucial to continue providing the best care for your loved one and avoid caregiver burnout.

At ARBI, we understand the challenges caregivers face. Our monthly Caregiver Support Group provides a compassionate, non-judgmental space where caregivers can connect, share their experiences, and openly discuss the challenges they encounter. Our co-facilitators, including a social worker and a psychologist, are here to provide expert guidance and support.

  • Where: ARBI, 311 Cedar Crescent SW, Calgary, AB
  • When: Third Thursday of each month, 5:00 p.m.–7:00 p.m. (September–June)

Through these sessions, you’ll find emotional support from fellow caregivers who can relate to your journey. Additionally, you’ll gain access to valuable information and resources aimed at promoting your well-being, reducing conflict, and building resilience.

ARBI focuses on the needs of unpaid caregivers who care for loved ones who have experienced a brain injury or stroke. During our meetings, you’ll have the opportunity to connect with other caregivers who share similar experiences, all while prioritizing your own health and well-being.

Please note: This group is exclusively for caregivers; loved ones who have experienced a brain injury should not attend.
